Monday came around and i jumped in the car with andrew, his sister and his girlfriend and we headed to artist bluff. This is the perfect hike to find incredible views of the park and some amazing foliage in autumn. People have been drawn to this area along the river for thousands of years.

The 35 minute drive was a beautiful one, seeing the sun cast a beautiful light on the trees was magical. Artist bluff is not a hard trail but can be a little taxing if you are a novice hiker. From the tallest peaks to the short and flat distances, there’s something for every skill level.

The views from the top are beautiful. The plan is to take it slow, and lounge out with a view, as well as down by the adjacent echo lake if we feel inclined, enjoying the mild 50 degree weather in the mountains while we have it. We parked across the street.

The climb down from bald mountain follows the same trail and includes the same hazards as the climb up. In winter months, the steep sections can get icy, so we highly recommend utilizing microspikes for traction. The trails are a mixture of tough climbs and descents and smooth fast singltrack working along some of the uplifted rocks in the area.

But there’s a common misconception among those just getting started. It then continues upward and onward to artist's bluff spur. The southern section is about 17 miles from moab and the northern section is a few miles beyond that.

Go up roughly a half mile where you see a large parking area on your right. Throughout this trail, especially on the way down, there are some minor exposed roots and rocks. The sweetheart's bluff trail head is at the western end of the municipal campground.
